An unexpected pocket of time between clients, thanks to free flowing traffic and a perfectly positioned carpark, gifted me 30 delicious uninterrupted minutes to lose myself in a fictional world amongst characters who have quickly become friends, before entering the Corporate world and needing to be ‘on’ for them.
Seriously, does it get any better than that?
Not for this Ripenist!
Introduced to reading at a very early age by my wonderful parents, it has been the one pastime, or hobby, that has been a constant in my life.
The really good books stay with me for years. Like a much loved, well-worn, soft and comfy dressing gown, I (metaphorically) wrap my books around me and it feels sooooo good.
In fact, when my lovely man and I moved into our open plan home, I really didn’t settle until I had a large bookcase – made-to-measure – installed on one of our few windowless walls.
Unpacking and placing my books therein was just like welcoming old friends into my house. And suddenly the house felt like home.
Simply seeing that well-filled bookcase brings me peace, a sense of abundance and quiet, fizzy joy.
Even while I go about slowly decluttering possessions and simplifying my life, I know with absolute certainty that I will always have books somewhere in my environment.
I’m not a purist – I also do my fair share of downloading reading material too. Occasionally one of those books is just so good that I feel compelled to buy a hard copy also, to share with my Beloveds. The gifting of an excellent novel, in particular, has sweetness about it for me.
It’s a bit like introducing one friend to another; I really hope they’ll like each other too!
And then there’s the very wonderful slowing-down-ness that reading requires of me.
In what can sometimes be the hurly burly of my life, getting comfortable (invariably with a cup of hot lemon tea and Spike, the Spoodle, snuggled in beside me) I pick up a book, I sit and settle and sip and sigh with happiness.
